Tumblr Thread: The Two Very Different Species Of Catopumas

Just when you think that animals couldn't get weirder… Somehow, every once in a while we find an animal that manages to surprise us. First, it was the Viscachas who looks like they're perpetually done with everything. Then, we discovered the Jaguarundis who just looks annoyed and confused all the time. Finally, just last week, we have encountered the Tasmanian Devil who looks so pettable but would probably bite your finger off if you actually tried to.

And today, tumblr is introducing us to the Catopuma. Or actually, we are learning about the two species of the genus so far - one of whom looks kind and warm and wholesome. The other… looks like a devil spawn. We're not even exaggerating. Scroll down, and you will see what we mean.

    We are not sure if we've ever seen a cat that fits the description of "gentle" more perfectly. This is indeed the most gentle cat we haver ever laid eyes on. This is the kind of cat who would headbutt you and lick your nose and let you confide all your secrets in them.

    And then this. This is a demon from hell. This is the kind of cat who would take all your secrets and sell them to the highest bidder. This is the kind of cat that you would be tempted to pet because you're weak for all cats and would then bite you finger. This is danger. We're in love.

I love animals in general, cats specifically, and learning new things, so this is a great post to call my attention to! I knew nothing about these cats, and now I know many things. I sometimes have trouble knowing what others will find just as interesting as I do, versus being very reasonably bored to sleep by the things that fascinate me, but some brief facts that may be of interest to others

    Font - Both are small cats, the golden is the larger of the two near bobcat size at 20-30 pounds, the bay is the smaller with a weight range of 10-20 Ibs. Goldens are relatively well known and for their 25lbs size are super fierce (i mean, they're cats) they feed on birds, lizards and rodents, but also can bring down prey much larger than themselves, such as goats and even the calves of water-buffalo.

    Font - We know almost nothing about Bay cats. We don't know what they eat, what they're social nature is, nothing about how they reproduce, nothing. As far as I can tell, the one pictured was one of two caught by a farmer after having broken into a pheasant aviary in Borneo, and the other died very quickly of, evidently, loss of freedom. other than that we have a handful of reported sightings and like three images from jungle camera traps.     Plant - Their closest relative is the Marbled cat which is the size of a house cat (between 5 and 10 Ibs, but with rounded ears and an extra long tail) and lives along the Himalayas/ down through parts of Malaysia. It's a canopy hunter and eats things like squirrels, birds, lizards, frogs, etc. It looks like this Marbled Cat/opygl

    Head - The bay cat kinda reminds me of a fossa. Which, if you really wanted to know what a cross between a weasel and a cat would be... that's a fossa my dude. They are primate hunting specialists, eating a diet of mostly lemurs, and they look like this
